4 reasons why the vacuum cleaner lost power and how to fix it

Not everyone likes to spend a lot of time putting their house in order. Many people want to do everything quickly and efficiently. But this does not always work out. It’s especially disappointing if the reason for delaying cleaning is problems with the operation of household appliances. One of the most common problems is the deterioration of the vacuum cleaner's traction. But you shouldn’t get upset right away. In most cases, the deficiency can be eliminated independently without significant financial and time costs. The test should begin according to the principle from simple to complex.

The principle of operation of a classic vacuum cleaner

The most common and familiar model is the classic vacuum cleaner. This is a familiar horizontal unit on wheels, with a plastic body and a hose, operating mainly from the network.

Purpose of the main parts of the vacuum cleaner:

  • housing – protects the inside of the device from mechanical stress;
  • commutator motor - drives the compressor; in modern models they have a power of 1500 W;
  • centrifugal compressor - creates rarefied air flows and pumps them;
  • filter system for collecting waste;
  • a set of attachments and brushes for effective cleaning.

The operating algorithm of the vacuum cleaner is as follows: when turned on, the vacuum fan starts and begins to suck in air with dust particles and pieces of debris. The air flow passes through a filter system. As a rule, vacuum cleaners designed for dry cleaning have several filters. The first, made in the form of a bag or reservoir, holds large debris and dust particles at the entrance to the device. The filter located in the engine compartment protects it from clogging and prevents damage. The third filter is located at the outlet - it traps the smallest dust particles, releasing a clean stream of air out.

Mechanical damage

If the first 2 options do not help, the device must be checked for mechanical damage. The most common ones are:

  1. Damage to the corrugated brush hose. It may break during prolonged use. In this case, it can be temporarily repaired using electrical tape.
  2. Damage to the mechanism for attaching the hose to the vacuum cleaner body. There are also cases when it is simply not fully inserted.
  3. The brush mechanism itself is clogged or the bearing is worn out, resulting in difficulty rotating the brush.
  4. The hose is clogged with large debris from the inside.

Why might the power have decreased?

The suction power of the vacuum cleaner could have decreased both due to violations of the rules for its use, and for reasons beyond the control of the consumer.

The garbage container (or bag) is clogged

First of all, you need to check whether the dust collector is full. If so, it will need to be cleaned or the trash bag replaced. Many models have a function to indicate how full the bag is. This makes it much easier to control it. There are situations when this indicator breaks down and shows false information. As a rule, this happens when its spring is deformed or when the piston system jams. To repair the indicator, you must contact a service center.

Problems with the power regulator

When reducing power, you should also pay attention to the position of the power regulator. You may be let down by simple forgetfulness. Perhaps, when you previously used the vacuum cleaner, you set the regulator to the minimum position and then did not switch it to normal mode. Sometimes the regulator starts to work incorrectly because a lot of dust has accumulated in it or the tracks on the electronic board have oxidized. It is better to entrust the repair of the electronics included in this unit to the specialists of the service center.

Engine brush wear

A decrease in engine power can be caused by worn brushes. Its armature rotates at a high number of revolutions. To reduce friction, i.e. Reducing wear on the commutator, they use sliding contacts that convert mechanical energy into electrical energy. They are called electric brushes. The part of the brush in contact with the commutator is made of carbon. Over time, it decreases in volume and length. Accordingly, the spring pressure becomes weaker and gaps appear. This causes sparks to appear when the engine is running and loss of power. Due to poor contact, the engine does not reach the required speed or does not start immediately. Replacing worn brushes with new ones can correct the situation. As a rule, in this case, the brush holders with the springs on which they are held are also changed.

Clogged hose

Another reason for a decrease in power may be a clogged hose. To check, you need to disconnect the hose and make sure there is a draft at the place of its connection. If everything is fine with the draft, then the problem is in the hose. Foreign objects, socks, lumps of paper, hair, and dust can get stuck in it. All this restricts air flow and can even block it. If necessary, the hose can be carefully cleaned using a long stick or a mop handle.

In addition, you need to check the vacuum cleaner brush. Large debris gets stuck there first, creating a blockage in the air flow path. You need to remove the brush and look inside, even check with your finger or tweezers to see if there are any foreign objects there.

It is also necessary to check whether the hose is damaged. A small crack or tear can cause a significant reduction in power. A significantly damaged hose cannot be repaired and must be replaced.

Filter contamination

Many models have mesh or foam filters. If they are not cleaned and changed on time, they will definitely become clogged. The rules for servicing filters for each specific model of vacuum cleaner are described in the instructions for it. Foam filters simply need to be rinsed under running water and dried. A heavily clogged paper filter must be replaced. As a rule, after cleaning and blowing the filters, the suction power is restored. HEPA filters cannot be restored; they must be replaced with new ones.

Cleaning the filters

Moving further in troubleshooting, you need to check the cleanliness of the fine filter (installed in front of the motor) and the HEPA exhaust filter, which is attached to the back of the case behind a plastic grill. As for the first filter, it must either be completely replaced or washed with water and dried, which depends on the versatility of the material. The HEPA filter, as a rule, needs to be replaced every 50 hours of operation of the equipment so that the vacuum cleaner’s traction does not disappear at the most inopportune moment. Have you checked it, replaced it, but the vacuum cleaner, as before, does not collect and suck up debris well? We look at the following elements of the suction system.

Should I repair my vacuum cleaner or buy a new one?

If minor damage to the hose is detected, and the crack is located close to one of the ends, you can try to repair the hose yourself. To do this, you need to remove the end switch, cut off the damaged area with sharp scissors or a knife, and clean the inside of the end switch from the remnants of the hose. Then you need to treat the edges with sealant and screw the end cap into place.

If a crack appears in the middle of the length of the hose, you can try to repair it by replacing the damaged area with a pad from a bicycle inner tube or heat shrink. You can try to seal very small holes with tape or tape. But, you need to understand that such a “repair” will solve the problem only for a short time. Therefore, the most correct solution would be to replace the hose or buy a new vacuum cleaner.

If individual components of the vacuum cleaner fail, you need to evaluate the feasibility of repairs taking into account the operating life of your vacuum cleaner, the availability and cost of the necessary components. The service center will be able to repair the wire winding coil, replace the control board or reset sensors. If troubleshooting requires repair or replacement of the engine, then the optimal solution would be to purchase a more modern and reliable model of vacuum cleaner.

Ways to solve problems

Having considered why vacuum cleaners have poor suction and heat, it is worth familiarizing yourself with the solution to these problems.

Everything related to the electric motor cannot be repaired on your own. This requires specialist intervention. Vacuum cleaner manufacturers are trying to improve product quality by installing high-quality components and parts. And if they fail, then more often than not they have served their time. Therefore, there is no point in repairing them. In workshops they are simply replaced with new ones.

A burnt-out motor winding can be replaced, but this still reduces the quality of the motor. Therefore, experts recommend changing it or purchasing a new vacuum cleaner. The winding burns out for four reasons:

  • the bearings sagged, which caused the rotating rotor to sag, so it began to touch the stator winding, abrading it and removing the insulation;
  • overheating of the winding, which causes the insulating layer to burn out;
  • the collector becomes clogged;
  • Water got on the winding.

Problems with liquids often arise. If the vacuum cleaner is not washable and does not have an aqua filter, then it cannot collect spilled liquids. Especially if there is a paper bag installed inside the vacuum cleaner. With any protection, even a small volume of water will penetrate inside the motor and reduce its service life.

Troubleshooting the board is possible, but only in a workshop. Here you have to look for an element that has burned out or stopped functioning due to the end of its service life. It is usually changed. It is rare that the entire plateau has to be removed. But this also happens.

If the voltage in the house is low, then the solution is simple - install a step-up transformer.

  • shock-absorbing DynamicDrive wheels, installed on many models, provide soft maneuvering, smooth running of the vacuum cleaner, without damaging the floor covering.

Vacuum cleaner characteristics: suction power

Suction power is precisely the characteristic on which the effectiveness of the vacuum cleaner directly depends.

However, when choosing a vacuum cleaner in a store, you will be surprised to find that manufacturers, with the skill of a magician, hide the value of this parameter, effectively replacing it with a more expressive power consumption.

Read our review to find out how to understand these parameters and purchase exactly what you need.

Is suction power that important?

As you know, any vacuum cleaner removes dust and dirt using a vacuum method, that is, by reducing the pressure inside the housing.

Due to the pressure difference, an air flow is formed, which draws contaminants into the pipe of the device.

Obviously, the quality of cleaning depends on the volume of air and its speed in this flow, which together is called suction power. That is why, when choosing a device, this parameter should interest us most of all.

What does it say on the box?

Having learned the suction power of the vacuum cleaner model they like, most buyers scratch their heads in surprise.

There is something to be surprised about: this parameter for the most productive unit (of course, we are talking about household appliances) does not exceed 480 - 500 W, while on the box and body of the vacuum cleaner there are bright inscriptions “1500W”, “2000W” and even “ 3000W".

How can we explain such a big difference? The thing is that manufacturers, in order to attract buyers, indicate the total power consumption, and often not the nominal, but its maximum value, which is observed only at the moment of starting the engine.

Unique robot vacuum cleaners

Robot vacuum cleaners offer completely new solutions and approaches to keeping rooms clean:

  • Thanks to the Smart Navigation system, which modern models are equipped with, high-quality cleaning in hard-to-reach places is facilitated;
  • optical sensors and additional sensors of the Furniture Protection Technology system ensure trouble-free movement of the robot vacuum cleaner around the apartment;
  • the latest models, such as Scout RX2, provide remote control of the device using a mobile application;
  • Three-stage cleaning, provided on the latest models, completely removes dirt, sweeps and vacuums;
  • The timer will allow you to start cleaning at any time you set in advance.

Washing washable and reusable filters

Some filters are “reusable” and their manufacturers allow the filter to be washed under running warm water for cleaning purposes. Read the instructions for your vacuum cleaner carefully. There may be additional information on washing the filter there. You should not wash paper filters, as they may become wet and lose their filtering properties.

If washing the filter does not bring satisfactory results, then most likely the filter is worn out and needs to be replaced.

High-quality HEPA filters can not only visually keep the room clean and protect the internal parts of the vacuum cleaner from wear, but also clean the air from the smallest particles, microbes, and microorganisms. The service life of filters, according to the recommendations of vacuum cleaner manufacturers, is usually 6 months and may be reduced depending on operating conditions.

Washing vacuum cleaner device

The vacuum cleaner has 2 tanks for filling with water (Fig. 3):

  • tank for clean water and detergents;
  • container for draining dirty water.

Water containers can be located in several ways:

  • horizontally;
  • vertical;
  • in each other.
