What to do if your apartment smells like burnt wiring?

Quite often, in old panel houses, electrical wiring faults occur over time. This is due to the fact that the wires are not able to withstand the load of powerful electrical appliances or the insulation simply begins to crack, because Its service life has already expired. The smell of burning in a room is a very dangerous situation that can lead to a fire. In this article we will tell readers of the Sam Electric website what to do if there is a smell of wiring in the apartment.

Reasons for appearance

Determination of the dose of water chlorination.

As for chemical sources that lead to unpleasant odors, the most common are chlorine and sulfur. In many regions, sulfur enters water naturally, with increased concentrations observed at certain times of the year. Sulfur can be recognized by the characteristic smell of rotten eggs. Because of it, the water takes on a bitter taste.

Chlorine is the substance most often used for water purification. Sometimes it is added too much, in some situations it simply stagnates in the pipes. Therefore, the water needs to be allowed to flow through the tap for some time. Usually the taste and smell of the substance disappear after a few seconds.

The metal of water pipes causes a change in the smell of water. Lead, steel and copper can leach into water, giving it unique tastes and aromas. Steel and copper are usually present in water in small concentrations and are not capable of harming the human body, but can lead to a change in the color of the liquid. If rusty water comes out of the tap, this indicates an increased iron content. A more serious problem is lead. Even in small concentrations it is very harmful to human health. If you have the slightest suspicion that your water is contaminated with lead, you should stop drinking it and contact the water utility with a request to have it checked.

Algae blooms in reservoirs are also a fairly common cause of unpleasant odor in water.

Algae blooms in the reservoir sometimes cause an unpleasant odor in the water. Before reaching consumers' taps, the water is repeatedly filtered and cleared of various types of organisms, but the odor may remain. Typically, using household filters eliminates odor. In most cases, such water is not dangerous for health.

In addition, system leakage can cause a change in water odor. If substances from the environment penetrate into the water supply, the effect of its use will be completely unpredictable. As a rule, water pipelines are reliably isolated from wastewater, since sewerage is always laid below clean water supply lines, but it is impossible to completely protect against other pollutants. If your home is located in an area with high concentrations of any kind of pollution, follow the advice of your local utility company

In such areas, they regularly inform the population about precautions and rules for using water.

Why does the cabin smell like burnt oil?

Repeated occurrences of a persistent burning smell in the cabin are a sign that the lubricant is getting on the hot walls of the cylinder block, the exhaust system and/or adjacent components. Most often this is due to engine problems . The most likely reasons why an oil smell may appear in the cabin are listed in the table:

Probable CauseCharacteristic signsCause of the problem
Wear of oil sealsOil leaks in the crankshaft area, most often from the timing drive side.High oil level, increased crankcase gas pressure.
Wear of oil scraper ringsOily spark plugs, blue smoke and oil smell from the exhaust pipe.Untimely oil change, engine overheating, natural wear of the CPG.
Clogged or depressurized breatherOil leaks in the area of the pipe or valve cover gasket, cracking of the hose.Irregular cleaning of the breather, excessive oil runs.
Low oil volume in the crankcaseThe “oil can” indicator is on or the oil level on the dipstick is low.Lack of oil, leak, burnout in the engine.
Leaking valve cover or cylinder head gasketsOil leaks between the cover and the cylinder head or between the head and the cylinder block.Worn or incorrectly installed gaskets.
Crankcase gas outletOiling in the area of the pipe and hose, breather, oil filler neck, valve cover.Clogged ventilation system, worn piston rings.
Oil leak through turbineOil contamination of the throttle valve and intake manifold or blue smoke and oil smell from the exhaust pipe, increased oil consumption.Clogged air filter, oil line, oil overflow, turbine malfunction.
Transmission problemLeakage through the gearbox input shaft oil seal, deterioration of the clutch, leaks at the junction of the gearbox housing and the engine.Use of unsuitable oil, wear of seals.
Oil getting into the power unit housingTraces of oil on the cylinder block, mainly around the oil filler neck and dipstick hole.Oil spilled during replacement/checking, the oil filler cap was unscrewed, the dipstick seal was worn.

As a rule, the smell resulting from oil leaks intensifies when the engine warms up, as the oil begins to burn out. If oil gets into the exhaust system, symptoms appear almost immediately after starting the engine. During rain or snowfall, the cause of a temporary odor may be the ingress of moisture with oil particles or reagents from the road surface onto the exhaust pipe.

Turn off the electricity

If you notice a wiring smell, turn off the power in the apartment. As soon as the air in the room becomes unpleasant (burnt), the wiring in the room burnt out, or the smell began to come from the corridor, the search for the source is relegated to the background.

Even if you feel that the smell of burning is only in one place or from some household appliance, do not waste time on a targeted shutdown.

Immediately inspect the place of initial contact, that is, the shield or meter. Then turn off the circuit breaker or lower the toggle switch. For greater safety, unscrew the machine or the plug and only then start looking for the place where the unpleasant burning smell is coming from.

There is a smell of wiring in the apartment, what to do and where to call

Sometimes there are situations when you can smell burning wiring in the room. As a rule, this happens in old houses where the wiring is old, but modern buildings are not immune from this, because electrical installation can be done incorrectly or using low-quality conductors. If you hear a smell, you need to immediately take action; you can’t hesitate - a fire may happen. In this article we will tell you what if there is a smell from the wiring in your apartment, where to call and how to quickly fix the problem.

There is a smell of wiring in the apartment, what to do and where to call

Initially, you must clearly understand that everything is in your hands. You can’t hesitate or think here, everything depends only on you. Yes, you need to call the experts, but only after you are sure that nothing is in danger. We have divided this instruction into several parts, to quickly solve the problem, follow everything step by step.

Turn off the electricity

First of all, you need to turn off the power to your apartment or private house. To do this, turn off the circuit breaker. If you have old wiring and meters, then unscrew the plugs.

Then you need to check all the devices and unplug them from the sockets. This is done so that some device may already be on fire, so you can definitely check if everything is in order

Please note that we pull appliances out of sockets. After this you can be sure that there is no threat to life

Checking the wiring

Now you need to understand by smell where the breakdown occurred. This is quite easy to determine; you need to listen to the smell. As a rule, wiring fires occur at the junctions of wires and in junction boxes. Less often you can hear a smell from the panel and in the places where RCDs and circuit breakers are connected.

If you cannot determine by smell, then begin a visual inspection. Check all corners, also see how to find the wire in the wall. The circuit breaker may light up as shown in the photo.

Or an outlet.

If this happens, then you need to start correcting the situation. It can be fixed in two ways:

  • Carry out your own repairs.
  • Call an electrician.

However, we recommend checking everything yourself first. There is a high probability that the smoke is caused by household appliances. If this is the case, then it is enough to turn it off, so there is no point in calling someone.

If the cause cannot be stopped, then you need to call an electrician, there are no options here.

How to protect yourself from wiring fires

In fact, protecting yourself is quite simple; there are several basic recommendations; if you follow them, then nothing bad will happen in your home.

  1. Always choose quality wiring. Don't be fooled by cheap prices - this is your life and property.
  2. Install surge protection circuit breakers.
  3. You need to correctly calculate the cable cross-section for current and power; you can even use our calculator for this.
  4. Check the wiring in your home occasionally.
  5. Never turn on too powerful appliances; as a rule, they are the ones that cause a lot of trouble.

So we have sorted out the question of what to do if there is a smell of wiring in the apartment. The action plan has been sorted out, now say a few words about who you need to call:

  1. If there is a danger of fire, call the Ministry of Emergency Situations.
  2. If nothing bad happens, dial the housing office numbers.
  3. If you need to resolve the issue quickly, then a private electrician is right for you.

what to do? Instructions for action in case of smell from wiring

The reason for the melting of the rubber braid of electrical wiring is often a poorly laid and connected circuit and an increased load on it. Fire may occur in hot areas.

Procedure if there is a wiring smell in the apartment

Most often, old electrical circuits fail, which over the years have lost their original properties and stopped conducting current. Increased risk - at joints made of different materials without special treatment or the use of adapters. Overheating can be caused by poor-quality installation of electrical wiring, when wires and cables, sockets and switches are not able to withstand the load of simultaneous current consumption.

Checking the wiring

With a flashlight, we begin to search for the problem area. Start with the panel, carefully inspecting the outgoing and incoming electrical wires. If the reason is in the internal network, you will have to deal with the problem yourself or call a specialist. If the cables to the panel overheat, immediately call an emergency team from the service company, since it is impossible to turn off the power to the network and eliminate the heating yourself.

Often places of overheating can be extension cords, joints in distribution boxes, and less often in walls.

In any case, increased load leads to heating; electrical installation causes of overheating are incorrect connection of electrical cable cores of different chemical compositions.

If the old wiring in the wall is completely out of order and gets hot, you need to break the channel and replace it. The docking problem is solved by installing terminals.

What does heating the wiring cause?

When using electrical wiring, the conductor that transmits current can heat up (the cords heat up) and lead to a fire.

Physics of heating

In any metal capable of conducting electric current, there are free electrons that are in constant chaotic motion, moving from one atom to another. If a cable is connected to a constant source of electricity, these particles begin to move in an orderly manner from one end of the wire to the other and back again.

Along the way, collisions with atoms constantly occur. Due to slight braking, part of the energy is transferred from the electrons, increasing their temperature. And the more charged particles move along the cable, the more such collisions and energy exchanges occur, and the temperature constantly rises. During the natural course of these processes, cooling occurs due to environmental influences.

Problems with a burning socket arise due to poor-quality installation of the element or defective parts.

Areas of increased risk are twists made of metals of different chemical compositions, since during the movement of electrons the atomic structure is disrupted, the more resistant metal destroys the weaker half, the contact area is covered with a corrosive film, and the flow of current is hampered or stopped.

How to protect yourself from wiring fires

You should only buy certified products that have been tested with maximum load levels. To carry out wiring in an apartment or house, you need to calculate the rated and maximum loads in advance, select the appropriate cross-section and number of cores.

Avoid multiple tees and extension cords when connecting high-power devices. Connect light sources only through special devices.

Immediately check the part of the wires that will be hidden in the walls for integrity. If it is necessary to hide the cable under the baseboards, the electrical wires are additionally protected with a rubber casing.

Why does my washing machine smell burnt?

If your machine is connected through an RCD, then turn it off as well. First of all, check the socket, it may have melted. Then it is better to contact an electrician. If the plug and socket are in order, then rule out other causes. The smell of burning does not always indicate a malfunction; sometimes it is a matter of subtleties of operation:

  • The new washer smells like burnt plastic when it heats up. This happens at first, when parts and elements heat up during washing. But if the technology is no longer new, then it’s worth thinking about.
  • When washing with new powder or soap, there was a burning smell. Sometimes mothers wash baby clothes with soap shavings or a powder that is not suitable for the machine. Products can stick to the heating element coil, which leads to an unpleasant odor. Run a high temperature program to remove build-up.

If all else fails, then you will have to look for the problem. SMA smokes when wiring, contacts, or electronic parts of equipment are damaged. Here are the main reasons that require the intervention of a specialist:

  • The contacts of the interference filter or heating element are burnt.
  • The tracks or contacts of the control board are burnt out.
  • The washing machine wiring has shorted out.
  • The drive belt is frayed.
  • Short circuit due to water entering the motor.
  • Drain pump overheating.
  • Contamination of the heating element, ingress of foreign objects onto the coil.

All these reasons require a thorough inspection, diagnosis and repair of equipment. You can independently inspect and find the location of the problem. But it’s up to you to decide whether to carry out repairs or not.

Sources of stench: common options

Modern houses are equipped with a sophisticated sewer system designed to remove residual waste products. Its operation is accompanied by specific odors, since wastewater flowing through the pipes emit hydrogen sulfide and other unpleasant-smelling substances.

When the sewerage system is working properly, the “aroma” in the premises (including the bathroom, kitchen, toilet) is almost imperceptible. Its appearance indicates a malfunction in the functioning of technical communications or plumbing fixtures.

When a sewer smell appears, it is important to determine its source. If this cannot be done on your own, it is important to immediately contact a specialist.

The most common causes of stench can be:

The most common causes of stench can be:

  • Mistakes made when installing the sewer system. The appearance of odors in the room may be due to improper installation of pipes or loose connections.
  • Burst of a sewer pipe in the central or apartment distribution system. A leak can be either obvious or almost invisible: a microcrack or a joint not treated with sealant is often enough for gases and moisture to leak through.
  • Inadequate assembly quality of the siphon or its malfunction. This component of plumbing design plays an important role in preventing the entry of foul gases.
  • Blocked pipes or drains. Household waste, hair, and food waste that accumulate in siphons or pipes begin to rot, releasing a specific “aroma.”
  • A malfunction in the operation of the water seal, as a result of which the “water plug” is destroyed, which prevents the appearance of sewer odors.
  • Defects in the functioning of ventilation, which is equipped in apartment and private buildings. The system is designed to remove stench from the sewer system; If she doesn't do a good job, the stench penetrates the apartments.
  • Incorrect connection or violation of operating instructions for the washing machine. In some cases, a useful unit becomes a source of a specific odor.

In addition to those listed, there are many other reasons that cause “odors” in the room. Some of them are easily removable, others require the help of specialists, and often extensive, expensive work.

Below we will look in detail at the various sources of stench and tell you what measures need to be taken in specific cases.

Where can the unpleasant smell of burnt oil come from in the cabin?

Typically, the smell of burnt oil enters the car interior through the air ducts of the ventilation system, the entrance to which is located above the engine compartment. It is most clearly felt after the engine has warmed up, with the cabin fan turned on and the recirculation mode turned off. Odor can also come through:

The main reasons for the appearance of odor in the cabin: video

  • pedal assembly;
  • central tunnel in the area of the gearshift lever drive;
  • door seals;
  • slightly open windows.

The persistent smell of burnt oil in the cabin clearly indicates a technical malfunction of the engine , less often the transmission and attachments. Their sources are usually localized in the engine compartment, so you can smell the burning smell by looking under the hood after the engine has warmed up.

The smell of burnt oil in the vehicle interior can come from the exhaust system or components of the transmission and all-wheel drive system located under the interior floor. If you don’t feel it when you open the hood, you should look for the problem in a pit, overpass or lift.

What to do if you smell burnt wiring or plastic in your apartment or house

At the first sign of a problem with electrical wiring, the smell of burning and plastic, it is necessary to urgently take safety measures, and in no case should these factors be ignored.

Urgent Security Measures

As soon as a burning smell appears or the electricity begins to work intermittently, first of all, you need to protect yourself from fire. This requires:

De-energize the room, house, apartment

You need to turn off the machine (move the lever to the “OFF” position), or if the device is an old model, then unscrew the plugs. Carefully unplug all electrical appliances. Call a technician to identify and fix the problem. To avoid problems with wiring, install an RCD in the panel

At the first sign of current leakage, it will work and let you know about a malfunction

To avoid problems with wiring, install an RCD in the panel. At the first sign of current leakage, it will work and let you know about a malfunction

If the smell of the house appears, then it goes away on its own.

Does the smell of burning and plastic suddenly appear and then disappear? How to be in this case?

This condition is not normal and indicates problems in the electrical system - a short circuit occurs somewhere. The problem area should be identified and the cause of the problem eliminated. Common ones include:

  1. Line overload.
  2. Old wiring.
  3. The insulation has expired.
  4. Sometimes a failure may occur due to a lightning strike.

Signs of malfunction cannot be ignored. You should also turn off the power to the house and call an electrician.

Emergency cases

In the event of sparks and fire, you should immediately turn off the electricity in the entire apartment and call the fire department or electrician.

Another emergency case is electric shock to a person. If the wiring is faulty, injury can easily result from contact with an electrical appliance, exposed wire, or from a regular outlet. The victim should immediately call an ambulance, and while they are on the way, provide first aid:

  1. Give oxygen: open the window, unfasten the buttons on clothes and the zipper, sometimes it is necessary to clean the growth cavity.
  2. The head should be thrown back and the lower jaw should be pushed forward.
  3. Perform a closed heart massage: clasp your hands together and press your palms on your chest (on the xiphoid process) thirty times.
  4. Cover the victim’s nose with one hand and blow twice into the mouth.

You need to repeat until your heartbeat and breathing are restored.

You cannot hesitate in such situations; every second of delay can cost a person his life.

Keeping your apartment and house clean is the key to health, good mood and comfort. But it is important to carry out a timely inspection of the condition of the electrical wiring. In fact, it is a vital element of the functioning of a residential building. At the first sign of a malfunction, you need to turn off the power to the house and call a technician.

Step-by-step cleaning

General cleaning, which can be divided into six stages, will help completely remove the smell of burning in the house and bring the room back to life.

  1. Damage assessment. Burnt items and furnishings must be thrown away. Furniture that needs to be restored can be left behind. If the floor covering (parquet, linoleum, carpet) is damaged, it will have to be removed. Surviving pillows, blankets, and books should be taken out into the fresh air for ventilation.
  2. Wash. Wash all textiles affected by smoke - towels, robes, aprons. Have your rugs, rugs, and bedspreads dry cleaned.
  3. Dry cleaning. Remove the burnt wallpaper using a spatula. Brush off large soot flakes. Work lightly without spreading the soot over the surface. Vacuum the walls and floor. Don't start washing without dry cleaning.
  4. Wet cleaning. Add one teaspoon of ammonia and one tablespoon of vinegar to five liters of water. Wash the floor, walls, ceiling with the solution, wipe the shelves, window sills, furniture. If you are in doubt about the surface's reaction to the solution, test on a small area.
  5. Ventilation. Open the windows slightly and dry the washed areas. Do not rush to return the items you took out to the room.
  6. Air humidification. Turn on the humidifier and leave it on overnight. If you don’t have such a device, now is the time to buy it. A humidifier will soften and purify the air. To scent the room, place coffee and zest in different places, and light scented candles.

It is necessary to change the wallpaper, re-lay the floors, paint the ceiling. An ignored burnt area of the apartment will become a source of unpleasant odor, toxic fumes and, as a result, poor health.

How to determine the cause of the smell of burnt oil in the car interior

To determine the cause of the smell of burnt oil in the car, you first need to localize its source. In most cases, the smell spreads:

How to determine the cause of the smell of burnt oil in the cabin: video

  • from the engine compartment;
  • from under the car;
  • from the exhaust pipe.

Indirect signs will help you determine the exact location in advance. If you smell burnt oil when driving with the windows open, the smell appears or intensifies when you turn on the interior ventilation system and disappears some time after turning on the recirculation mode - most likely it comes from the engine compartment. The appearance of odor when the windows are open while parked and its absence when driving indicates that the source is located under the bottom . When oil is released directly through the exhaust system, in addition to the smell, blue smoke . A visual inspection will allow you to reliably determine the source.

If maintenance has recently been carried out, including changing the oil, adjusting valves, replacing oil seals and cylinder head gaskets, valve covers, and exhaust manifolds, first of all you should inspect the components that were repaired and serviced for oil traces.

Oil smell from engine compartment

The main reasons for the smell of oil from the engine compartment:

Oil leaking from under the cylinder head cover

  1. Oil that gets onto the engine or gearbox when adding or replacing it.
  2. Leaking valve cover and cylinder head gaskets.
  3. Leaking crankshaft and camshaft seals.
  4. Clogged or damaged pipe of the crankcase ventilation system (breather).

More precisely, the source of the smell is determined by visual inspection of the engine compartment for traces of oiling. To check the condition of the crankshaft and camshaft seals, it is necessary to remove the timing cover.

A leak from under the valve cover gasket can be eliminated by tightening the cover fasteners without exceeding the permissible torque. If this does not help, the gasket needs to be replaced. If the cylinder head gasket is leaking, leakage of not only oil, but also coolant , including their mixing in the cooling system and cylinder block. This malfunction is indicated by the smell of coolant and white smoke from the exhaust, the presence of oil stains in the antifreeze and a change in its level in the expansion tank. A broken gasket must be replaced immediately.

Oil leak from crankshaft seal

If you find oil around the breather hose , remove it, wash the hose itself and the oil separator filter, and then inspect it. If there are cracks in the pipe, it must be replaced. A stuck breather valve also requires replacement. The release of a significant amount of oil through the breather may be a sign of wear on the elements of the cylinder-piston group , a clogged air filter, a clogged oil deflector drain, or an increased oil level in the engine.

leaks from under the crankshaft and camshaft seals indicate an increased oil level , increased pressure in the cylinder block, for example, due to clogging of the crankcase ventilation system, or wear of the seals themselves. If the oil level is normal, the breather is not clogged and there are no signs of excess pressure (when you open the oil filler cap, no smoke comes out, the cap does not fly out when unscrewed), the seals need to be replaced.

After eliminating the causes of the leak and in the event that the smell of burnt oil in the car interior appears as a result of a spill, it is necessary to remove all smudges in the engine compartment using a rag and brake cleaner.

Oil smell from the bottom of the car

Oil leak from engine to exhaust

If the smell of burnt oil penetrates from the bottom after or during driving, inspecting the car on a pit or a lift will help.

Oiling of the engine oil pan may be a result of a leaking gasket, insufficient tightening of the drain plug, or deformation of the o-ring. To eliminate the cause, worn parts must be replaced.

Oil marks at the junction of the engine and gearbox indicate oil leakage through the gearbox input shaft oil seal or the rear crankshaft oil seal. The exact cause can only be determined when the gearbox is removed, but first, pay attention to a number of features that can lead to a preliminary conclusion.

Indirectly, transmission oil is distinguished from motor oil by the following characteristics:

Oil leakage at the junction of the engine and gearbox

  • Gear oil has a strong sulfur odor and is darker in color.
  • If you bring oil-stained fingers together and then spread them apart, the film from the transmission oil will break immediately, but not from the engine oil.
  • Dissolve a drop of oil in water - the appearance of a thin iridescent film indicates a transmission leak.

A strong smell of burnt oil after driving a car with an automatic transmission indicates burning of the friction linings, which, in turn, is a sign of a low level or insufficient transmission oil pressure, or other problems in the automatic transmission.

The reason for the periodic appearance of the smell of burnt oil from the bottom may be oil from the road surface getting into the exhaust system. Most often this happens in rainy weather or when there is snow on the road.

In vehicles with all-wheel drive, you should also check the transfer case and gearbox housing for leaks. Oil may leak from them due to worn seals that need to be replaced.

Burning smell in the exhaust

Blue smoke from the chimney is a sign of serious problems

If you smell burnt oil when driving or parking, but you do not find any leaks in the engine compartment or under the bottom, take a closer look at the exhaust.

Smells, traces of oil, and blue smoke from the exhaust pipe are signs of serious problems.

The cause may be severe wear of the CPG, stuck piston rings, worn valve stem seals, and in turbocharged cars also problems with the turbine. To eliminate the cause, a comprehensive engine diagnostics is required.

Danger of shorted wiring

During the normal flow of electric current through the wires, the load is distributed evenly, the current does not exceed permissible limits. It happens that two points of an eclectic chain are connected with polar values not provided for by the normal operating mode. This leads to an increase in current at the connection point, and ultimately to a short circuit.

The danger of such a process is fire of wires and power outage, electric shock to a person. Of course, the worst consequence is a fire.

The most dangerous is hidden wiring under finishing materials, such as drywall or plaster. Because it is difficult to detect the connection point. Even an experienced craftsman does not always have the right tools.

A short circuit is accompanied by a burning smell, interruption in operation and a power outage. In serious cases, equipment melts and catches fire.

Washing machine repair

Attention! Independent intervention in the internal parts of equipment and working with electrical contacts is dangerous. Therefore, without special knowledge, it is better not to take risks and contact a specialist. We will still describe the general sequence of actions so that you understand how to carry out the check.

Filter and heater wiring problems

The electrical contacts of the washing machine often suffer from high humidity and oxidation. It’s not just a matter of water intake into the drum, but also where the machine is installed. Condensation often collects in the bathroom and settles on all surfaces. Also, the operation of electronics is affected by voltage drops in the network.

If the SMA smells burnt, inspect the surge protector wires. It is located under the top cover of the case. Do this:

  • Remove the two bolts from the back.
  • Slide the cover forward and remove it from the body.
  • There is a filter on the side wall.

  • Inspect the wiring and contacts.

The presence of burns and black deposits indicates damage. Elements require replacement. You also need to inspect the heater contacts:

  • Remove the front or rear panel of the CMA.
  • Under the tank there are the leads of the heating element.
  • Inspect them for damage.

To get rid of deposits on the coil located in the drum, run a program with hot water and adding citric acid. If after this the burning smell starts again, then mechanical cleaning or replacement of the element is required.

Damage to MMA wiring

All electrical components of the machine are connected by wires that lead to the control module. In this way, the unit can control the operation of equipment by sending signals to turn it on and off to its nodes. If the wires are shorted, their coating may melt, so the machine smokes and emits an unpleasant odor when operating.

It is necessary to inspect all contacts and connections that lead from one node to another. In case of damage, contact a specialist for help. The video from the user BT Repair shows another option for burns:

Drive belt problem

At the base of the tank there is a bearing that can wear out over time. As a result, the pulley becomes warped and the belt frays. When spinning at high speeds, you can smell burnt rubber and black smoke comes out. In such cases, the bearing and belt need to be replaced.

To replace the drive belt:

  • Unscrew the bolts around the perimeter and remove the back cover.
  • Remove the old belt.

  • Place the new one directly on the motor pulley, and then, turning it, on the drum pulley.

To replace the bearing, you will have to disassemble the SMA, remove the tank from the housing and knock out the worn part from its seat. You can purchase a set of oil seal and bearing at a spare parts store.

Engine damage

A cracked tank causes leakage and moisture to enter the machine's electric motor. Then a short circuit occurs. In this condition, the equipment cannot be operated, so disassembling the case and troubleshooting is necessary.

Carefully inspect the washer tank. It could crack if hit by a foreign object. A small crack can be sealed, otherwise the tank will have to be replaced. Also inspect the engine and diagnose its performance. In the event of a malfunction, replacement is carried out as follows:

  • Behind the rear cover under the tank is the motor.
  • Disconnect the chips from the engine.
  • Tighten the mounting bolts.
  • Rock the assembly back and forth and remove it from the housing.

When a short circuit occurs, the motor winding often suffers, so repairs are unprofitable; it is better to completely replace it.

Pump fault

Non-stop operation of the pump leads to a burning smell and breakdown of the unit. To replace the pump in Electrolux and Zanussi washing machines, you will need to dismantle the back wall. For Siemens, Bosch, AEG models, it is necessary to disassemble the front panel, but in SMA Samsung, Whirlpool, Beko, Kandy, access is through the bottom.

Next, do this:

  • Prepare dry rags.
  • Loosen the clamps, remove the drain hose and pipe.
  • Unscrew the bolts or turn the pump counterclockwise.

If the electronic part of the pump breaks down, install a new spare part. The disassembly stages are shown in the video All about washing machines at the link:

Now you know what to do if your equipment breaks down. We recommend that electrical problems be resolved by a professional. But an ordinary user can easily inspect the components.
