How to choose a rectangular or square chandelier for a suspended or plasterboard ceiling: tips, options and photo examples

Types of lighting fixtures

Lighting fixtures for indoor and outdoor lighting have different wattages, sizes and frames.

Ceiling lamps can have lamps:

  • LED
  • luminescent
  • halogen

By installation method:

  • hanging
  • invoices
  • built-in

Dimensions

For spotlights, a standard diameter is assumed. Its indicator varies from 60 to 85 millimeters. It is thanks to these dimensions that this type of lighting is suitable for arranging stretch fabrics.

Large sizes are not convenient enough for installation. They require extra space and seem bulky.

The size of the point elements should be selected depending on the parameters of the room itself. For example, in small rooms it is better to install lamps with a smaller diameter in order to save space.

LED lamps

As one of the options, ceiling LED lamps or LED lamps. They appeared on the market relatively recently, but have gained great popularity. Their choice makes it possible to place light accents in the right places, since they have a directional flow of light.

With their help it is easy to divide the room into several light zones. These lamps can be installed along the entire perimeter of the ceiling, which will make your room brighter, or in one place, making an accent in the central part of the room; they are often used in studio apartments. They are suitable for installation on walls, for example in the hallway or bathroom, as well as in the kitchen.

In addition, they can be used in various institutions and offices. LED lamps are considered the most environmentally friendly, since they do not use gases, they do not break and do not require special disposal.

Their service life is long, while they are low in energy consumption. They do not heat up at all, so LED square lamps in suspended ceilings are the best option for their use.

Both one lamp and several small spotlights look great on a stretch ceiling. They can be used as the main source of room lighting or as an additional one. In this case, you can choose neutral, warm or cold light from the lamps. They are more expensive in price than fluorescent or halogen lamps.

Squares of light in the interior

A square ceiling lamp is an infrequent “guest” in home interiors. Much more often, laconic forms are found in industrial premises and office buildings. However, do not be afraid of unusual options - you will be surprised how harmoniously they complement any style:

  • Modern. Art Nouveau interiors are replete with curved lines; all you have to do is slightly dilute them with a strict “square” lamp.
  • Ethno. The style of the land of the rising sun involves the use of frosted glass, elegant bamboo, the finest rice paper and aged wood. Strict geometric shapes will fit quite harmoniously into this concept.
  • Cubism. This type of Art Nouveau, by its very name, hints that round lamps have no place here.
  • Minimalism. Laconic forms, a minimum of color, an almost complete absence of decorative elements - a description of the minimalism style could well be a description of many models of square lamps.

Geometric shape is not at all synonymous with rigor and conciseness. Built-in square lamps with intricate patterns can decorate boudoirs and living rooms, children's rooms and bedrooms.

Fluorescent lamps

Fluorescent lamps are also quite popular and have a fairly long service life. Their light is close to natural. They are not afraid of power surges.

Square overhead lamps perfectly distribute lighting throughout the space. They are optimal in large areas - halls, living rooms, hallways. But even in rooms with a small area they will fit well into the interior.

In the store you can choose lamps in any frame. There are metal, wooden, ceramic, plastic, crystal with and without patterns, with pendants, carvings, etc. They can have different colors and vary in size. This kind of chandeliers offers an optimal combination of price and quality.

Materials

One of the main elements of a fashionable and attractive design is skillfully created lighting. The selection of a source of high-quality artificial light directly depends on a lot of properties: functional purposes, mounting area, mounting specifics, decorating details and design as a whole. Undoubtedly, an essential aspect of the purchase is the composition from which the lighting device is made. Thus, we will analyze the positive aspects and negative features of popular compositions for the manufacture of lighting devices.

Metal

This material, painted directly to resemble gold, silver or bronze, allows you to create an exquisite design. Such models certainly look expensive and are often produced with the addition of forging. In addition, this composition is popular when creating lighting products in the current high-tech style.

The advantages of square ceiling lamps with a metal base are:

  • strength and long service life;
  • reliability and resistance to any contamination;
  • ease of maintenance and the ability to use any cleaning products.

There is metal to a certain extent in almost every lighting fixture, since pendants and individual mounts for lampshades are made from this composition.

A lamp made in silver is considered a real decoration of any room interior.

Glass

The indisputable advantages of a glass chandelier made of glass are:

  • abundance of shades and configurations;
  • resistance to the adverse effects of sun rays or temperature changes.

One of the types of glass is crystal - an exquisite and common material that goes perfectly with classic interiors. It is an invaluable decorative component in theaters, reputable hotels, and offices of large organizations. Crystal is valued much more than ordinary glass, but will be just as fragile.

Lighting products made of crystal are a generally accepted sign of wealth.

Tree

This material is a natural resource that is appropriate in almost any design: from country and Provence to classic and loft.

Advantages of a wooden chandelier:

  • environmental friendliness;
  • compatibility with different components and textures;
  • relatively low price.

Disadvantages include difficulty in maintenance and cleaning compared to metal, plastic and glass products. In addition, due to the impressive level of humidity in the room, wood can change shape, and with temperature changes, it can crack or completely burn out.

Wooden lighting products are considered the true embodiment of family comfort.

Plastic

Chandeliers made of plastic are more economical, stronger, simpler and, in general, much more practical than chandeliers made from other materials.

Among the indisputable advantages of a plastic product are:

  • low price;
  • ease;
  • abundance of presented shades, configurations, textures and sizes.

Plastic allows you to organize lampshades in truly incredible configurations.

Textile

Textile material is an attractive and fashionable composition that is now actively used for the production of lighting fixtures of various configurations, dimensions and designs.

Its distinctive characteristics:

  • unusual external image;
  • a colossal range of shades and patterns;
  • optimal price;
  • light weight.

Among the disadvantages of fabric products are the difficulty of care, and this material gets dirty quite quickly.

Currently, not only classic sconces and floor lamps are produced from textile composition, but also amazing chandeliers.

Halogen lamps

And chandeliers with halogen lamps will be slightly more expensive. They have a longer service life, they are brighter, it is possible to control their luminous flux, but during operation they get very hot and react poorly to changes in electricity. These lamps must be replaced with gloves.

Drawings

The next original addition to the interior are the patterns on the spotlights. In this case, you can give free rein to your imagination.

You can choose different colors and patterns for lighting elements.

With this innovation the room will become mysterious and unique. Elegantly painted lamps will not leave anyone indifferent. In addition, a wide variety of patterns will find their application in any style: from classic to modern.

Recessed square luminaires

Recessed square lamps are also widely used in interior design. According to the method of fastening, they are similar to overhead ones, but due to the spring present in the design, lamps of this type are pressed tightly against the ceiling, almost merging with it.

They are used more often in rooms with suspended ceilings. These models can use fluorescent, halogen and LED lamps.

Hanging chandeliers with square-shaped lampshades are interesting and unusual in their design. They can have different colors and sizes, lampshades can be made of a variety of materials - colored plastic, frosted or transparent glass, wood materials, or can be combined in various combinations. Your choice will depend on the ceiling height, size and style of the room.

Lighting system installation

The luminaires are mounted on a special platform fixed to a concrete floor slab or wooden ceiling structures.
The platform can be made of metal (factory made) or wood. A mounting bracket is attached to the platform, from which the lamps are suspended. When calculating the height, a backlash of 15 mm is taken into account. Proper installation hides bases, sockets and housings if they have an unattractive appearance. When installing track structures with the installation of rotating spots, holes in the canvas are made only for track fastening rods. This reduces the overall number of punctures and makes work easier.

The distance between individual lighting fixtures ranges from 30 to 40 cm. A thermal ring is used to isolate heat from the heating lamp.

The main problem during installation is an overly stretched ceiling sheet. In this case, breaks are possible, so it is more logical to entrust the lighting installation to the same company that installs the ceiling. This way you will protect yourself from unnecessary expenses, and the mistake of poor-quality installation will be guaranteed to be corrected.

Tips for choosing lamps

As a rule, large bright chandeliers look better in spacious rooms. For small cozy rooms, several small lamps are more suitable.

It is desirable that the shade of the lamps be in harmony with the tones of the interior.

If you are not sure what color of lamp to choose, then the best option is lamps with a white or black frame, they are universal. You can use combined lighting with various lamps.

Which lamps are better is up to you to decide. Modern chandeliers vary in functionality. With their help you can create the necessary atmosphere in the room. For example, bright light encourages action, determination, and work.

Dim lighting can create a romantic atmosphere. Set up for rest or sleep. Also, the emitted light from lamps can have a different hue (pink, greenish) depending on the choice of bulbs. In addition, modern chandeliers are often equipped with a remote control in addition to the usual switch.

Forms

Often, owners of tension-type ceiling structures use the standard shape of spotlights - round. It meets all the necessary requirements, allows for normal lighting and looks harmonious in any interior.

However, there are other forms of lighting elements. Square lamps are especially popular.

They look unusual and allow you to add some charm to your design. It is worth noting that when choosing a particular form of lighting device, you should carefully consider its relevance in the overall interior of the room. There is no need to focus on finding a non-standard solution to make the ceiling of your home attractive in the future.

Today on the market you can find products not only of round and square shapes, but also of other geometric shapes. Also not least on the list are more subtle forms, such as a flower.
