A smart plug, also known as a Smart Plug, is such a practical and useful idea that it's surprising that they've only recently become available. Smart plugs allow you to significantly upgrade your home, providing options you didn't have before. In addition, they are small and very elegant. They emphasize the style of a modern home, often a smart home. So, let's find out what Smart Plugs 2022 are: which ones to choose and save a lot of money .
We emphasize that you are dealing not so much with an outlet, but with a specially prepared cover, inside of which electronics are mounted, which significantly expands the possibilities of using a standard 220V outlet.
It is important to note that Smart Plug operation is primarily based on advanced control of current flow. It should be noted that they can be controlled from the control panel equipped with a smart home, or using a special mobile application.
This allows you to easily turn off and on your connected devices without leaving your location. Many sockets also provide electricity metering and many other additional features. A big advantage of Smart Plug is also its ease of connection - the cover is simply inserted into a regular socket.
All this means is that a smart plug allows you to better control how your devices are used, as well as the amount of energy they consume. Thanks to this, you can change your habits, for example, reduce your energy costs.
From this article you will learn:

What is a smart plug?
However, before we get into the benefits of this device, let's briefly explain what a smart plug is.
A smart plug is a cover for every 220V outlet you have in your home. Most often it consists of a small cuboid that contains advanced electronics, and, of course, a plug that you insert into the outlet
A smart plug can control the flow of electricity to specific devices and is also in constant contact with the corresponding app on your mobile device. It can also communicate with a smart home control unit.
Radio controlled socket with remote control. Let's learn to remember...
There were many reviews of such a device. You can consider this an addition. This outlet has a drawback. When there was a power failure, it reset all its settings. The problem is completely solvable. Maybe it will be useful for someone... I found four reviews about these sockets: And in none of them did I find the answer to the question. First, look at the store page. They have the peculiarity of changing price tags several times a month.
And no technical information. Fortunately, there are included instructions. But first, let's look at what form it came in. The device arrived in a box without a name.
Inside is a remote control, two sockets and instructions.
Everything was packed in a regular plastic bag.
Everything basic is written. Brief, but succinct. Plug type: Europlug Voltage: 230 V AC/50 Hz Switching power: 230 V AC/3680 W Max. Operating frequency: 433.92 MHz Reception range: up to 20 m Remote control power supply: 1 * L1028 23A 12V DC Alkaline In fact, the operating voltage is much wider. The power supply unit is built according to a standard design with a capacitor as ballast. The remote control is small in size. Equipped with a 23A 12V alkaline battery. Not a very convenient option.
And here is the socket itself.
Brief characteristics are duplicated on the case. It is easy to disassemble, just unscrew four screws.
The socket has a built-in safety latch mechanism; the holes open when a plug is inserted into it and pressed. It is also necessary to note that the plug of this radio-controlled socket can be rotated 90 degrees. The Euro plug itself is held on by two latches. It is better not to insert it into an outlet when disassembled. In this case, it can easily jump out of the grooves... If you look at the printed circuit board, traces of flux are visible. The board is not washed. Soldering network wires is also a concern. Let's see what's inside the remote control. Everything is held on by a self-tapping screw and several latches.
The soldering itself is not bad, but even here the flux is not about class=”aligncenter” width=”800″ height=”600″[/img]
Looks like I've looked at everything. It's time to get down to business. Sockets were purchased for specific purposes to control the power supply of a Samsung TV and heating boiler. Samsung TVs do not have a power off button, so I had to remove the plug from the socket quite often. And this is not very convenient. In principle, application can be found both in the country (remote activation of watering) and at home. The adapter sockets are trainable. They can be assigned to any (1-2-3-4) pair of buttons on the remote control. You can control an infinite number of sockets, as long as they are within reach (20m). Brief binding algorithm:
When you turn it on for the first time, you need to bind the socket to a button on the remote control. When connected to the network, the LED on the socket “blinks” at a frequency of about 0.5 Hz. On the remote control you need to hold down one of the ON/OFF buttons with the desired number. The LED “blinks” at a higher frequency and goes off. The device is connected. When turned on, the red LED on the socket lights up. When turned off, the LED goes out.
Now you can turn the load on/off using the button on the remote control. There is also an ON/OFF button on the socket itself. It can also control the load. But there is one big BUT. If you remove the socket from the network or if there is a power failure, you will have to reconnect it. If you look at the printed circuit board, you can see that one chip U3 and one resistor R15 are missing.
Almost everyone guessed which microcircuit is missing: 24C**. The main problem turned out to be in the R15. For full communication between the memory MC and the KX-002 controller, the SDA leg of these microcircuits must be “pulled up” to +5V. A resistance of 100 kOhm is sufficient.
I didn’t have resistance of this size, so I soldered a more familiar one between the fifth and eighth leg of the MC memory.
Problem solved. We put a clean MC memory, resistance, and everything works! You don't even need a programmer. With a clean MS memory, the socket turns out to be tied to buttons number one. To bind to other buttons, you must first unlink them. To do this, just hold the ON/OFF button on the socket for about 3 seconds. I have already described the binding algorithm. And a short video about how the socket works. Don't scold too much. youtu.be/58CRyLCfiFM Everyone decides for themselves how to properly use the information from my review. I can only guarantee the veracity of my research. If something is unclear, ask questions. I hope it helped at least someone. I just didn’t understand this Chinese strategy. Saved 20 cents on parts, lost 10 dollars in functionality. That's it. Good luck everyone! The product was provided for writing a review by the store. The review was published in accordance with clause 18 of the Site Rules.
Smart Wi-Fi plug - what is it?
Finally, it's worth returning to devices that operate using Wi-Fi networks. As we already mentioned, you can control their operation using mobile devices (such as smartphones and tablets) that work on the same home network. All this means you don't have to move around to manage the energy use of devices in other rooms or on other floors.
In the case of this type of socket model, it is worth paying attention to their additional functions that make them better than standard solutions. By connecting your wall socket and your mobile device, you have access to extensive statistics that let you know how much energy specific devices consume and when consumption is highest. Based on multi-day statistics, you can make the necessary changes to optimize energy consumption. There is also nothing to prevent special operating schedules from being created for specific devices.
Added to this is the ability to remotely start and stop equipment, as well as the presence simulation programs mentioned above.

Smart electrical outlet - benefits
After analyzing the above information, you can finally answer the question asked in the title of the text. A smart plug seems to be an extremely useful device, especially when you want to control modern equipment or when you want to have more control over your energy consumption.
With advanced mobile apps, you have access to many statistics and configuration options that allow you greater control over our devices. This guarantees great convenience and, most importantly, the opportunity to reduce your energy bills. All this makes us think about Smart Plug sockets.
Tips for setting a timer
When setting up the device, make sure that the program parameters do not contradict each other. Otherwise, the Off option always takes precedence. In other words, if programs overlap each other, none of them will work fully.
An example is a situation where one of the settings indicates the operating time of the device from 9:00 to 19:00, and another setting indicates from 11:00 to 17:00. As a result of such settings, the outlet will only work until 17:00, since it is at this time that the first command to “turn off” occurs.
How does Smart Plug work?
A smart plug is most simply described as a remote-controlled smart switch for electrical equipment . Many models also have an energy consumption measurement function. You don't need to worry about installation. The socket does not require assembly. You don't need to know anything about electricity. It is enough to take them out of the box, insert them into a regular outlet and connect any electrical device to it.
From now on, the smart socket will control the power supply. This means you can turn the device on and off remotely and know exactly how much power is being consumed. All this information will be sent to your smartphone or tablet . An example of such a smart plug is TP-Link HS110. The outlets can also use different wireless standards. This could be, for example, Ultra Low Energy (ULE) or Z-Wave.

Which smart plug to choose?
When choosing a smart plug, first of all pay attention to its functions. The basic one is, of course, remote turning on and off of connected devices.
If you want to enjoy the extraordinary convenience of smart plugs, you must choose the right model. In this case, it is not always worth choosing the cheapest devices, because very often their set of functions is significantly reduced. So, what should you pay special attention to?
Operating range
A very important parameter that will tell you from what distance you can control the operation of the socket.
It is also worth paying attention to the range of smart plugs. It will tell you at what maximum distance the receiver should be located, the function of which can be performed by both our mobile device and the central unit.
Communication
So how do you manage the socket. Standard models use ULE and Z-Wave wireless standards, but Smart Plug Wi-Fi models are now very popular. They allow you to communicate over the Internet.
If you care about constant monitoring, you must decide on the outlets that you can connect to not only at home, but also outside (of course, you will also need Internet access). Thanks to this, you always have access to detailed statistics on energy use in our home. You can also turn off device data at any time - just select one option on the screen of your smartphone or tablet. You can also buy a socket with a Bluetooth module.
Functions
We have already mentioned two main ones - remote turning off and turning on connected devices, as well as detailed control of energy consumption. This way, you can conveniently reduce your energy bills. However, these are not all the available functions.
For good quality devices, you can enter schedules that will turn the devices off and on at specific times and for periods of your choosing. Thanks to this, you don't have to worry about leaving the TV on standby or having a lamp on.
Smart Plug also has safety features. It detects that the temperature of the devices is too high and also alerts you to the possibility of a short circuit. This option allows you to protect the electrical network and devices connected to it from damage. We can also mention the Amazon Echo feature, which allows you to control the outlet using voice commands.
Lighting control
It should be in the “features” section, but it’s worth discussing this option separately. By being able to turn lights off and on from a distance, you can reduce energy costs and implement programs to simulate occupancy in your home. All of this will prove very useful when you are planning a long holiday trip - it can effectively deter any thieves who would like to take advantage of our absence.
Statistics View
Some smart plugs are very extensive in this regard. Examples include models that automatically send certain data to a specified email address. In addition, there are daily, weekly or monthly reports that are sent to email or to our mobile device.
Supported Systems
Of course, we are talking about mobile device software. Smart Plugs are usually universal in this regard, but it's always worth checking to see if they're compatible with Android, iOS or Windows Phone systems.
Manufacturers
The availability of these sockets is becoming wider, so many manufacturers are deciding to make them. Devices from TP-Link, Osram, Hama, 1idea and Fibaro deserve special attention.
Price
The simplest models, operated by a handle, cost about 8 rubles. However, if you want more features, you should be prepared to spend between 200 and over 800 rubles.
It is worth noting that you can connect almost any device to the Smart Plug. Thanks to this, nothing prevents you from controlling the operation of your iron, TV, lighting, gaming equipment or even your air purifier.
Energy consumption monitoring
But some models will also allow you to monitor the current energy consumption of a device connected to an outlet. A smart plug with energy consumption statistics will tell you, for example, which devices consume the most electricity in standby mode.
Schedule for turning on and off the outlet
Such devices can be scheduled to turn on and off. For example, why should your TV be on standby in the middle of the night?
Visualization of energy consumption
Some outlets can also visualize energy consumption. They do this using LEDs. As consumption increases, the color of the light changes.
Temperature control
Some outlets can also control temperature. When a classic socket starts to heat up, a smart socket with an overheating sensor will notify household members.

Short circuit detection function
There are also smart plug models that can detect a short circuit in a powered device and cut off the power in such cases, thereby protecting the entire network from overvoltage.
Communication in smart plugs
When considering which smart plug to choose, let's also pay attention to the wireless standard it supports. It would be nice if your mobile device supported this too. The most common ones on the market are Smart WiFi plugs , such as the Ferguson Smart Wi-Fi Plug or the TP-Link HS110 . But you can also find Z-Wave Smart Sockets .
conclusions
When choosing a smart plug for your home, you need to consider the following points:
- the basic criteria for choosing a smart device are indicators such as rated voltage, rated current and the availability of protective options for safe use;
- special attention must be paid to the maximum permissible load, number of posts, type of equipment and functionality of the device;
- The type of smart socket plays an important role in choosing a smart socket - there are portable plug-in devices and models designed for embedding.
Do you need an outlet switch?
People who don't yet have a smart home system are probably wondering if they need a power outlet. Of course, different manufacturers have different requirements, but in general it can be assumed that if you want to control the outlets from inside the house, this is not necessary.
However, the beauty of this type of technology is that you can have this kind of control from anywhere in the world. And for this type of remote control you already need a central unit that will collect signals and send them to our mobile device. Such a smart socket with instant notification can tell us, for example, about a traffic jam in your home.
Principles for setting up different types of sockets
Mechanical and digital timers for 220 V have different principles for entering program data. In the first case, a ready-made time scale is used (as in a time relay), which serves as a template for configuration. Each of the blue segment keys is responsible for a period of 15 minutes. If any of the segments is pressed, the timer organizes the supply of electricity to the device. The TM50 scale looks like this:
As you can see, some of the keys are pressed (the period between 16-00 and 18-00, and also below - starting from 2-00). In addition, in the central part there is a rotating disk (the direction is indicated by an arc arrow) with a current time indicator (in the example, the triangle is set to 13-00).
You can learn more about how to set up such a timer in the following video:
The digital timer is set using the display and softkeys:
- TIMER – key for entering data and confirming it,
- WEEK – button to select the required day of the week. The screen displays the selection in English (MO, TU, WE, etc.),
- HOUR, MINUTE – enter time,
- CLOCK – used in combination with TIMER to change the time format from 12 to 24 hour,
- ON/AUTO/OFF – key for selecting manual or automatic operating mode,
- RANDOM – selection of the floating switching function (periodic switching is carried out within a given period of time with an interval of up to 30 minutes).
A visual overview of such a timer is in the following video:
What can you connect to a smart plug?
The answer is simple - everything that we usually plug into classic sockets. Thanks to Smart Plug you can turn on the kettle while lying in bed in the morning. You can turn off the TV while brushing your teeth in the bathroom. You can turn on garden lighting while on vacation. You can turn on the heating before you go home. The possibilities are only limited by your imagination. For example:
Boiler
To have your boiler heat water when you need it and turn it off at certain times, connect it to the Livi Socket smart socket for remote control.
You will be able to control the outlet via a mobile application: turn the boiler on and off as needed, set an operating schedule.
As a result, you will receive hot water at the right time and save resources every day.
Internet router
Inexpensive routers often freeze and leave gadget users without the Internet.
In order not to lose the Internet at the most inopportune moment, connect the router to the Livi Socket smart socket and set up remote control of the device using a script: when the connection to the Livi Smart Hub or the Livi Smart Hub 2G via the Ethernet channel is lost, the socket turns off for a short time, which causes the router to reboot.
If you want to limit your children's access to the Internet or reduce the time they spend on the computer, set the desired time to turn off the Internet router or computer in the application. For example, let the shutdown occur on weekdays at 16.00.
Washing machine
Imagine the situation: you turned on the washing machine, closed the door to the bathroom and decided to watch a movie or play with the children. In the morning we found wet clothes in the washing machine - we had nothing to wear to work.
To avoid this situation, connect the Livi Socket smart socket to the washing machine and set up a scenario according to which the socket will send a notification to your smartphone when the machine finishes working (when the power consumption drops below a set value). You'll know it's time to put your clothes in the dryer or hang them on the dryer.
Heater
A warm, cozy home is what you need after a busy day at work or a long journey. Connect the heater to a smart socket and set up remote control in a mode convenient for you: turn the heater on and off via the application or set a specific operating time.
In order to maintain a comfortable microclimate in your home, add a Livi TS temperature sensor to the smart outlet and specify the desired temperature value. The smart home hub will analyze the temperature sensor readings and control the heater to maintain the set temperature.
To remember to turn off the heater before leaving home and to get rid of obsessive thoughts during the day, set up a daily automatic shutdown at a certain time.
Aquarium
To ensure that aquarium fish, shellfish and plants please you for as long as possible, provide them with the microclimate necessary for life. Connect the smart plug to the lamp in your fish tank and control the light on a schedule. This will allow you to adjust the length of daylight hours for the inhabitants of the aquarium, create conditions closer to natural ones, and have a beneficial effect on the health of the inhabitants of the aquarium.
Floor lamp and lamp
To protect your home from uninvited guests in your absence, connect the Livi Socket smart socket to a lamp or floor lamp and set up automatic operation: let the light turn on and off periodically at night. This will create the illusion that people are in the house and will force intruders to choose another target for robbery.

Specifications
There are several standard technical characteristics of sockets with a timer:
- Maximum load. Depends on the model. The number of amperes must correspond to the power consumption of the connected device;
- Maximum and minimum voltage for operation;
- Dust and moisture protection;
- Number of sockets. How many electrical circuits can be connected to 1 device;
- Timer accuracy. Some models of mechanical timers tend to deviate from the set time.
Timer setting example
Let's assume that you need to configure the device so that it turns on every day for 4 hours from 19:00 to 23:00. Below we will tell you how to achieve this.
Go to system settings. For this we need the Timer key. After clicking on it, the message On 1 appears. Next, select the day of the week, and since we need to configure the device to turn on daily, we press the Week button until all days of the week appear on the monitor. Then select the desired time by turning on the Hour key. In this case, we are not interested in minutes, so we do not touch the Min button.
We save the turn-on time indicator by clicking on the Timer button. After pressing, the information is saved, and the message Off 1 appears on the monitor, with which you need to set the shutdown time. Set the desired parameter (in our case we are talking about 23:00). Using the Week key, select the days of the week, click on Hour and set 23:00. The programming mode is exited using the Clock button.
Buying an electronic socket timer can be considered a fairly simple task. Electronics and household supply stores have a fairly wide range of similar products. If you still have any questions, the sales assistant in the store will give advice on connecting and using a particular device.
Installation and configuration features
The specifics of setting the operating parameters are determined by the type of mechanism selected. As a rule, no additional electrical knowledge is required. If control is carried out via the Internet, you will need to download the application and control it anywhere at a remote distance from your home. If the device has a dial, click the desired response parameters.
Setting up an electronic landline
Stationary smart sockets are installed in the same way as conventional electrical installation products. Zero, phase and ground are connected to the corresponding terminals of the socket. When installed correctly, the neutral conductor is painted blue, and the ground wire is yellow-green.
How to set up a mechanical one - instructions
Sockets made in the form of adapters are connected in the same way as tees and other electrical splitters are connected.
All that is needed to set it up is to “drowse” the desired number and frequency of operation on the dial. After the end of the cycle, it repeats again.
