When crimping conductors, one of the main conditions for obtaining high-quality contact and its reliable operation in the future is the use of a professional tool. One of these tools is press pliers or crimpers, designed for crimping bushings, insulated, non-insulated lugs and automotive terminals.
Crimpers for automotive terminals and insulated lugs must have matrices with a double-circuit crimping profile - along the core and along the insulation. Also, its geometry and shape must correspond to the crimp part of the tip.
As a rule, it is best to buy sets at once, which include the pliers themselves and all the necessary dies.
Among domestic manufacturers, the KVT company stands out and its two crimping kits:
Let's look at their configuration, differences and principles of operation. Both of these kits are designed for crimping both insulated and non-insulated ferrules.
Press pliers have a mechanism for quick removal and replacement of dies.
Keep in mind that any matrix, like any part, has the property of running-in. And during the first few dozen crimping cycles, it is quite possible that the tip may bite.
Sometimes a jam occurs such that the matrix jumps out of its quick-release mechanism. This does not at all mean that the instrument is of poor quality, and over time, after breaking in, you will forget about this inconvenience.
In general, quick-release dies are, of course, a positive thing, but in practice there really is a lack of some kind of mechanism for their rigid fixation. And the longer you use the crimper, the more this mechanism weakens.
STV press tongs are made of high quality steel. Equipped with a ratcheting mechanism that provides a full crimping cycle. There is also an asterisk with which you can adjust the clamping force.

Built-in Chandelier
At the top there is a lever that allows you to unlock the tool from any position. If you choose the wrong die size and start crimping, the press pliers may not reach the very end, thereby blocking the handles in an intermediate position. This is where the unlocking lever is needed.

Review of Press pliers Kraftool 45466 | A good tool for the money. An air compressor with a pressure of 5-6 bar creates a working force on the contact surface of the dies, allowing the crimping operation to be performed within 1-2 seconds. Ask, I'm in touch!
Scope of application
A set of replaceable dies significantly expands the scope of application of KVT clamps. Thin-walled lugs for small-section wires (0.5-3.5 mm2) are marked NSHVI. When assembling various radio devices, they are used in large quantities. Press pliers KVT reliably and firmly crimp these tips.
One of the models, KVT PK 16u, is designed for crimping copper tips with a diameter of 1.5-16 mm2. The crimper forms petal, trapezoidal and wedge-shaped crimps of stranded wires.
PK 35u pliers crimp copper tips with a diameter of 6 to 35 mm2, aluminum, respectively, from 10 to 25 mm2.
It should be noted! The most common tool is KVT PK 16u. The letter “y” means that the tool, unlike the PK 16 press pliers, requires much less physical effort to perform crimping.

Main varieties
Modern manufacturers offer various modifications of crimping pliers, which may differ in both design and functionality. So, depending on the main purpose, two types of such instruments are distinguished:
- press pliers designed for stripping insulation from electrical wires and cables;
- tool for crimping tips and sleeves.
Press pliers for stripping insulation from conductors
Tools belonging to the first category are also usually divided into the following types:
- manual crimper is a fairly simple design, but effective device, which can be used to crimp cable lugs and sleeves of various sizes, as well as install contact connectors and terminals (some models are equipped with special blades installed in the place where the handles are attached; the presence of such blades in the design pliers can also be used to cut electrical cables and wires);
- electric pliers are a tool intended for primarily professional use (it is possible to use such universal pliers not only for crimping cable lugs and connecting sleeves of insulated and non-insulated type, but also for stripping insulation from electrical conductors);
- crimpers are tools with which you can install connectors and crimping lugs for wires, as well as crimp twisted pair cables (such pliers are equipped with two long handles, of which either one or both can be movable, a massive working part consisting of two working jaws, between which there are sockets for cables and wires of a certain diameter; the design of certain models of crimpers may also contain blades used for cutting electrical cables and wires).
Crimper for crimping ferrules with a set of replaceable dies
To perform crimping, a manual hydraulic press and electrically driven equipment can also be used.
Different models of crimping pliers used as a crimper for tips and sleeves may differ from each other in the shape of the working sockets, as well as the presence or absence of plastic flanges in such sockets.
The use of a crimper for tips and sleeves, the working sockets of which are equipped with such flanges, allows you to crimp stranded conductors with its help more efficiently.
Depending on the type of contact elements that the pliers are designed to work with, such a tool may be one of the following types:
- press pliers designed for crimping insulated sleeves;
- a crimping tool used to crimp connecting pipes that are not covered with insulation.
Tool for standard non-insulated terminals
The crimper for insulated terminals has a different jaw profile for neat crimping of the terminal without damaging the PVC tube
The design of the first type of crimping pliers has three oval-shaped working sockets, each of which is marked with its own color - yellow, red and blue. Insulated sleeves, for crimping which this type of pliers are used, are produced in the same color, so choosing the appropriate working socket for them is not difficult. In order to form high-quality and reliable contact between the tube and the electrical conductor placed in it when using such crimping pliers, the following nuance must be taken into account: the edge of the joint during the crimping process should be located in the middle of the upper profile of the working jaws of the crimping pliers.
The punch of crimping pliers, intended for working with non-insulated sleeves, is a metal rod, which must be located at the dividing joint during crimping. Thus, the compression of the connecting tube when using a tool of this type is carried out in its central part.
Press tongs STV
PC STV (KVT) is made of steel 3 mm thick. Unlike the KVT PK 16u and 35u KVT models, the STV press has elongated handles and is equipped with a more powerful lever mechanism. The STV series consists of 5 types of models.
Table of characteristics of crimpers KVT series STV
KVT model | Tip cross-section, mm2 | Crimping form |
STV-01 | 0,5-6 | Oval double-circuit |
STV-02 | 0,25-2 | Trapezoidal profile |
STV-03 | 10-25 | — « — |
STV-04 | 0,5-6 | Non-insulated petal double-circuit |

At night I found options where I could buy them with delivery from 2350 rubles to 2900 rubles. I ordered it in the morning and at lunchtime of the same day the “All Instruments” store delivered the tool to the facility in Moscow.
The packaging is standard, like most similar mites - in a blister.
On one side the diameters of the crimped sleeves or ferrules are clearly marked. The second side also has markings, but according to the Japanese standard, which is rarely used here.
The first impressions of the tool were good. At the time of delivery of the tool, I had a dozen 2 junction boxes and about 120 connections for sleeves with a diameter of 4.6, 10 mm and a certain number of 16 mm ready. Plus a dozen 3 wires that needed to be extended.
So. application. Sleeves of small cross-section for, say, extending a cable are feed-through, or for a parallel connection for 2-3 wires, they are pressed with one hand with a bang. It's comfortable. Quickly and when I try to pull it out, nothing happens. As it should be.
The photo shows a quick example of crimping two wires into a sleeve. After crimping the sleeve, we cut off the excess with a cable cutter and leave the length of the sleeve such that it is reliable and suits us at the place of use. In the example, the sleeve is matched to fit the volume of two wires in a parallel connection. Below are three wires.
It would be great if such bright markings of the section were on both sides. On the left side it is more often uncomfortable than comfortable. On the right side, operation is more common when working with sleeves on the ceiling.
With 4-5 wires it requires two-handed control of the clamps. And here there is a clearly unpleasant moment of the full opening of the pincers.
2. In fact, it is impossible to press with a diameter of 16 mm with them. An increase in grip leverage and applied force on the handles is required. Why you can put tubes on handles or other devices. For 16 mm there is the next model of tools that presses 16-33 diameter in the same series.

Which press pliers to buy for crimping wires The simplest modification of the tool is made in the form of permanently shaped jaws capable of crimping sleeves of a certain size. Ask, I'm in touch!
Design features and principle of operation
Most modern models of press pliers designed for crimping tips and sleeves have a similar design and include:
- punch - a movable element that exerts pressure on the connecting sleeve or cable tip;
- matrix - a stationary part into the working cavity of which a cable lug or sleeve is placed before crimping it;
- handles, the action of which creates pressure on the element being crimped (most handles of modern crimping pliers are equipped with plastic or rubber pads for ease of use of such a tool);
- a ratchet mechanism built into the handles (the purpose of such a mechanism is to provide a full cycle of crimping performed using manual press pliers: thanks to it, their working jaws will not open until the crimping is completely completed and will not close repeatedly until they are completely opened).
Principle of wire crimping
The principle by which a manual press for crimping cable lugs and sleeves works is quite simple. Pressure is applied to these elements, which are previously placed in the working cavity of the crimping pliers matrix, with a punch. As a result, the contact element is compressed around the wire placed in its interior. The quality of the contact created during the crimping process depends on two factors: how correctly the size of the replacement matrix is chosen, and on the amount of pressure exerted by the crimping pliers on the element being processed.
There are three types of crimping of tips and connectors
Pliers for crimping tips and sleeves, as a rule, have several working sockets with dies of different sizes. Each of these sockets, marked in different colors, is designed to work with tips and sleeves of a certain diameter. This design solution allows you to use one tool for crimping contact elements of different diameters, without wasting time on replacing dies. The configuration of the working cavity of the crimping pliers matrix, depending on the model of such a tool, can be square or trapezoidal. Accordingly, the contact elements acquire the same shape after they are compressed.
The working body of crimping pliers are special dies with various cutouts that provide the desired shape of the crimped tip.

How to use
KVT press tongs are equipped with a mechanism for quickly changing dies. The presence of quick-release elements allows you to use the same tool for crimping wire ends with different cross-sections, number of cores, and type of metal.
Matrices
PC KVT are produced in different models, which are suitable only for certain pullers. For this reason, you should purchase KVT pliers complete with a set of dies.
Note! Due to the occurrence (during use) of friction of parts, the dies require running-in. Therefore, during the initial period of use, minor difficulties may arise, which will disappear after grinding in the removable elements.

If the worker does not have enough effort to crimp the tip, then you need to check the correct choice of the matrix model or use a tool with more power.
KVT pliers, like any other tool, must be carefully looked after and kept in a case along with the dies.
The KVT company tried to take into account even the smallest consumer requests. Technical characteristics, design and product quality have ensured the manufacturer a leading position in the manufacture of such tools.
